hi, i'm karen.

I'M A WRITER & PHOTOGRAPHER BASED IN GUELPH, ONTARIO.
I graduated with a B.A. in English and creative writing at the University of Guelph, while also working as an editor for several years at their independent student newspaper, The OntarionDuring my undergraduate degree, I excelled in fiction, non-fiction, and poetry workshops taught by Lawrence Hill, Dionne Brand, and Shyam Selvadurai
Nowadays, I write about a variety of topics including news articles, music and concert reviews, and guest blog posts for a variety of publications, including The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, Exclaim! Magazine, Next Mag, THIS MagazineNOW Toronto, and more. I often advocate for sustainability and human rights in my writing; they are both topics that I strongly support.
When I first started out as a photographer, I was just a fan in the crowd with a point-and-shoot camera — I had no idea that several years later I would be earning media passes for my favourite tours and music festivals! I was excited to be recognized for my talent when one of my photographs was featured in Analogue Gallery’s 2019 Sound Image Music Photo Competition.
As a freelance photographer, I enjoy challenging myself with new projects. I mainly specialize in music photography, capturing the energy of live concerts; and portraiture, making a person feel comfortable as their best self. Recently, I’ve started enjoying the challenge of wildlife photography and product photography.
I would love to write or photograph for you! I’m based in Guelph but available to travel to Toronto, Kitchener/Waterloo, Cambridge, and the surrounding area. Alternatively, I’d love to work with you remotely.
